Evan Lysacek underscored in DWTS finale
Ballroom dancer Katrina Burch sat down with Figure Skaters Online to evaluate Olympic Champion Evan Lysacek and partner Anna Trebunskaya’s Viennese Waltz and freestyle, which the couple performed on last night’s Dancing with the Stars. Team Evanna scored lowest among the three couples in the finals.
Evan and Anna’s Viennese Waltz, which was their redemption dance, was absolute gorgeous and should have really scored a perfect 30. I don’t understand why it didn’t. In Week 1, it scored a 23, and was only five points better in the finals.
As for his freestyle. It was good but it wasn’t a true Dancing With the Stars freestyle. It was more Jive than anything else. But it was good. He was underscored in this dance as well. I didn’t like the song and I wish Anna and Evan had chosen a different song but it was a good dance, abet frantic at times.
In the DWTS group I help run on livejournal, someone made a comment that they all tried too hard for the freestyle because they all want it so badly and I really feel this was true with Evan.
I also feel that his schedule with Stars on Ice made it more difficult for him to prepare this week. In addition to the Viennese Waltz and the freestyle, he also had to prepare two more dances for tonight’s episode. He will perform the Argentine Tango and the quickstep.
The judges account for 50-percent of the score with fan voting making up the other half. Will the fans come through for Evan, who scored the lowest among the final three on Monday?

Though I’m not an expert, I definitely agree that Evan was underscored for both dances last night. I also got the impression that Bruno Tonioli was prepared to give them a 10 for their waltz, but was swayed by a comment that Len Goodman made; I don’t want to go so far as to say that that’s not fair, but it’s certainly frustrating.
I agree Mary. I thought to myself,”Len just swayed Bruno’s opinion..” VERY FRUSTRATING!
They turn in the scores before they comment I think. Carrie is always handing something to someone on the side right after the dance and I think it’s their scores. Holding up the paddles should match what is handed in.
I also think that Nicole and Derek should have been penalized more for the failed lift at the end of their freestyle. I don’t care if she’s “the best dancer we’ve had on DWTS in 10 seasons”, a failed lift is a failed lift. Ask pairs and ice dance teams .
In the opinion of many, of which I’m one, the outcome of DWTS was very wrong and unfairly judged, with formatting and other changes that absolutely negated the fan vote component in determining the winner. We feel Evan’s fan votes clearly put him over the top, but that these other very unfair manipulations made it impossible for him to win this title which he clearly deserved. The Evan Lysacek and Anna Trebunskaya support thread on DWTS MB contains the voices of many who express this opinion; we all love Evan and appreciate his typically gracious attitude in response to how he was treated, but we are very offended on his behalf.
