JOURNAL

February 8, 2009

My last season turned out to be very rocky.  I started off so well at Liberty.  I was able to put out new elements for the first time. It was a lot of fun catching up with everyone and seeing their new programs.  I also received a good critique from Team USA’s judges and officials.  I was pumped for my next competition.

JUNIOR GRAND PRIX ITALY:  This team was Brittney Rizo, Curran Oi, Danny O’Shea, Madison Chock, Greg Zuerlein, Isabella Cannuscio, and Ian Lorello.  The team leader was Brittney Bottoms and she was great.  We all had a blast.  The town, the rink and everything about it was more than PERFECT.  Rizo and I figured out that we are perfect roommates for each other because we are virtually the SAME PERSON!  When we weren’t on the ice we found ourselves exploring and wandering down streets, shopping at the over priced shops, eating pizza or gelato, and laughing.  My favorite part was waking up to our balcony blasting music and seeing the view of the mountains and river. But back to figure skating. Here I skated a solid short program and a shaky long which was good enough to hold me up to first.  I have to say that being first probably made the trip that much better.

JGP BELARUS:  Now this place was everything Italy wasn’t.  The trip was endless.  It started with a 7 hour flight, followed by a 3 hour flight, and then a 5 hour bus ride!  To entertain ourselves, the dancers, Isabella Cannuscio, Sara Bailey, Kyle Herring and Ian Lorello, and the Boston kids, Curran Oi and Brittney Rizo, and of course myself played numerous games of mad libs and “would you rather”. I have to say TOO MUCH FUN.  For the bus ride, Rizo and I watched Sex and the City and it only took us half way there.  At this trip Rizo and I decided to room together again.  Other than skating the only thing we got to see was the grocery store and a creepy tunnel. Here I fell apart and did not skate well at all in both the short and the long and ended up 9th.

EASTERNS:  Eastern sectionals was my next competition which was held in Boston, MA. All I remember about this trip was skating really well in all the practices but during the competition I cracked under pressure and fell apart.

Now:  Now I am starting to get back in the training mode.  I’m back to school, part time at the University of Delaware.  I can’t wait for the next figure skating season. I learned about believing in myself and training.  I’m hoping for a much better next year.  Thanks for checking up!

With love,

Mel
