And at the age of 6, he began learn to skate classes at the newly opened Castle Ice rink in Renton, Wash. He quickly advanced and began private lessons two months later.
Four years after he began skating, Josh won his first national title, 2006 U.S. Juvenile National Champion. Although he made it to the 2007 Junior Figure Skating Championships in Cleveland, Ohio, as the Northwest Pacific Men's Intermediate Champion, his success from the previous year on the national stage was not to be matched. He came in ninth place overall in his first year as an Intermediate. After much contemplation, Josh and his family moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., to train with Tom Zakrajsek and Becky Calvin. With the help of his new coaches and a great training program, Josh gained his second national title, 2008 U.S. Intermediate Champion. Josh continued the next year, working very hard, to be a top contender for the Novice national title. On January 20, 2009, he attained his goal of becoming the 2009 U.S. Novice Champion. In March of that year, he had the privilege of representing the USA in his first international competition in The Hague, Netherlands, winning the silver medal in the junior men's event of the AEGON Challenge Cup. Josh, who won his first Junior Grand Prix medal in September 2010, continues to represent Team USA on the junior level with the ultimate goal of one day becoming an Olympic and World Champion. Josh's goal for the season is to qualify for the Junior Grand Prix Final and be named to the U.S. team for the 2011 World Junior Championships. He competed for the first time nationally as a senior in the 2010-11 season. Following the U.S. Championships, he switched to coaches Christy Krall and Damon Allen. When he is not skating, Josh likes to read, mountain bike, hike and play his guitar. |
