The New Civil Rights Movement: Olympic athletes Johnny Weir and Megan Rapinoe spoke today with MSNBC’sThomas Roberts, saying that while they are concerned for their safety, they are more concerned about the LGBT community in Russia.

Weir, whose husband Victor is from Russia, said he is troubled not only by the anti-gay laws and climate in his husband’s native land, but by Americans who are attacking the country of Russia rather than the laws.

“In Russia it’s difficult to go against the government and do something that is against the rules,” Weir told Roberts. “But people in the United States right now are focused so much on attacking Russia and they’re kind of losing the point of attacking this law as opposed to attacking Russia as a nation.”
