Perth Now: A prominent Australian Olympian is the latest athlete to oppose a boycott of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Rennae Stubbs, an openly lesbian Australian tennis player who represented Australia at four successive Olympics between 1996 and 2008, says a boycott would achieve nothing.

“Making a point by punishing those that have worked so hard to represent their nation in an Olympic games, and not holding those countries accountable for their discrimination, is pointless,” she wrote on US website policymic.com.

Stubbs is far from the only athlete to see things that way.
