Gay Politics: The 2014 Winter Olympics are set to be held in Russia at the Black Sea resort city of Sochi, but with the country’s politics taking a decidedly anti-gay turn in recent weeks, Olympic officials are expressing concern, according to Gay Star News.

“The IOC would like to reiterate our long commitment to non-discrimination against those taking part in the Olympic Games,” a spokesman said in response to questions about legislation expected to gain final approval soon in the Russian Parliament. Its passage would impose fines and even deportations on those convicted of homosexual propaganda or advocating for LGBT rights, and some have suggested the law is so vague that even those who engage in public displays of affection could be arrested, something openly LGBT athletes traveling to the games would have to be aware of.
