Biography Chelsi Guillen was born May 28, 1993, in Tucson, Ariz. She first stepped onto the ice when at age 5. After a friend's birthday party at Gateway Ice Center, she began taking group skating lessons because "she loved being on the ice." Her skating career began to excel when she started taking private lessons in Scottsdale from former Olympic pairs skater Doug Ladret. After commuting nearly two hours each way, three days a week, the Guillen family relocated to Scottsdale in 2002, allowing Chelsi to train with Ladret full time. She switched her primary focus from freestyle to pairs in April 2006. Her favorite thing about pair skating is that "there is so much to learn," Chelsi said. "And the feeling I get when we work hard and accomplish our goals." The most defining moment in her skating happened at the 2007 U.S. Championships in Spokane, Wash. "Getting in our starting position and seeing the US Championships logo on the ice—with no hockey lines," Chelsi said. Her goals for the upcoming season include making it to the Junior Grand Prix Final and medaling at the 2008 U.S. Championships. Chelsi would also like to "compete internationally in both singles and pairs." Although she focuses more on pairs, Chelsi also competes as a novice lady. Her advice to young skaters is to "Dream, believe and achieve," she said. "Visualize your goal, see yourself there in your mind, believe you can get there and go after it—achieve it. Don't give up and stay positive all the time." Chelsi is currently a freshman at Desert Mountain High School. After graduating, she would like to attend Arizona State University in Tempe. Her hobbies are four wheeling, knee boarding, playing volleyball, listening to music and texting. She is also very close to her brothers, sister and sister-in-law, and enjoys spending time with them.
