The Americans finished with 60 points, including 12 from Evan's win in the men's competition, to best teams five other nations. "I've said this whole week I'm very proud of my team. They did a wonderful job. I think this is going to be a very memorable competition for everyone who participated, because it was the first of hopefully many," said Evan, the team captain. Skating to "Rhapsody in Blue," the same program that he used to win the World Championships last month in Los Angeles, he landed eight triple jumps and four double jumps. Among the passes were a triple lutz-triple toe combination, a triple axel-double toe and a triple flip-double toe-double toe. He bested World bronze medalist Brian Joubert by 1.47 points. Japan's Nobunari Oda was third while Canada's Patrick Chan, second at the Worlds, finished fourth, 20.58 points behind Evan. Evan's American teammate Jeremy Abbott finished fifth with 205.05. He recorded a season's best 83.70 points, surpassing the 82.70 scored at Worlds. His second place finish contributes 11 points to Team USA's total. In his performance to "Bolero," he started with a solid triple axel. Then Evan went on to land a triple lutz-triple toe combination and finished with a triple flip. Like at the Worlds, where Evan came from behind to win the gold medal, he trails France's Brian Joubert (85.39) after the short. Evan's American teammate Jeremy Abbott (71.27) is fifth. After the original dance, which five-time U.S. Champions Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto won, and the men's short program, the USA leads with 31 points. France is second with 27 while Canada is third with 22. » TOP
Evan is the U.S. Olympic Committee Athlete of the Month for March April 7, 2009 — The U.S. Olympic Committee announced Tuesday that newly crowned World Champion Evan is the male Athlete of the Month for March 2009. He previously claimed the award in November 2006 after winning Cup of China. "Wow," Evan said after learning he won. "It's such a great honor to be considered for the U.S. Olympic Committee's Athlete of the Month but to win the award again is really special for me." Evan bested cyclist Taylor Phinney, who he also topped en route to winning the USA TODAY's Olympic Athlete of the Week last week. Third place went to speedskating's Trevor Marsicano. For the second straight month, the female Athlete of the Month honor went to alpine skier Lindsey Vonn. Olympic silver medalist ice dancers Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto took the Team of the Month award after winning a silver at the World Championships. A two-time U.S. Champion and a two-time World bronze medalist, Evan had the performance of his career in March when he won the World Championship skating before his adopted hometown of Los Angeles. Evan is the first American man to win World gold since Todd Eldredge in 1996. Evan's total score of 242.23 points was not only a personal best but it is also the highest score ever received by an American man. And he set that record score without a quadruple jump, which he could not perform because of a stress fracture in his foot. His free skate, which brought the crowd to its feet about 10 seconds before his final combination spin was even complete, also earned him a personal best 159.53 points. He won both the technical element score (80.53) and the program component score (79.00). The program started with a triple lutz-triple toe combination then he nailed a triple axel and a triple Salchow. The other jumps were a triple axel-double toe, triple loop, triple flip-double toe-double loop, triple lutz and finished his jumping passes with a double axel. The stellar performance to "Rhapsody in Blue" was enough to overtake accomplished Frenchman Brian Joubert, who was first in the short program, and hold off Canadian teen Patrick Chan, who was third. Evan beat Chan (237.58) by 4.65 points and Joubert (235.97) by 6.26. The Worlds do not mark the end of the season for Evan. After starring in the final two shows of the Smucker's Stars on Ice tour on Friday and Saturday, he will head to Tokyo, Japan, with Team USA to compete in the inaugural World Team Trophy, April 16-19. The five other countries participating in the World Team Trophy are the Canada, Japan, Russia, France and China. Each team consists of two ladies, two men, one pairs team and one ice dancing team who will compete for a team honor rather than individual title. » TOP Evan USA TODAY's Olympic Athlete of the Week April 1, 2009 — Evan received USA TODAY's Olympic Athlete of the Week award Tuesday for his winning performance at the 2009 World Championships in Los Angeles. The vote came down to Evan and track cyclist Taylor Phinney, who won the individual pursuit title at the World Championships the same week that Evan won at Staples Center. Both Evan and Phinney are the first American man to win their respective World titles since 1996. "Any other week, either one of these athletes could have won the award," Dan Friedell of the USA TODAY wrote. "However, when the votes came in, Lysacek was the clear winner thanks to his brilliant long program performance in Los Angeles." Evan's performance to "Rhapsody in Blue" set a new personal best in the free skate (159.53) en route to a personal best 242.23 points overall. He received positive grades of execution on 12 of 13 elements in his free skate and a neutral grade on the other, all while skating with a stress fracture in his left foot. The LA Kings hockey team also honored Evan Tuesday during an intermission from their game with the Dallas Stars. Evan and the Kings, as well as members of the Lakers and Sparks basketball teams, train together at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo, Calif. » TOP

His whirlwind schedule includes Dancing with the Stars on March 30, the Good Day LA morning show and the the Los Angeles Kings game on March 31 and the Today show on April 6. Evan is also appearing at the Figure Skating in Harlem benefit gala and performing with Stars on Ice. Set your TiVo. While he is not performing on Monday's Dancing with the Stars, Evan will likely be shown in the audience with World Championship silver medalists Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto, as they cheer on friend Shawn Johnson. His interview on Tuesday's Good Day LA should air in the 9 a.m. hour on Fox. During an intermission at the LA Kings hockey game with the Dallas Stars, which is set to air Tuesday on Fox Sports Network West channel, Evan will be honored for winning the World title. He trains along side the Kings at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo, Calif. Evan will appear April 6 on NBC's Today show, marking the second time this season he's been interviewed on the show. He will later head over to the Wollman Rink in New York's Central Park for the annual Figure Skating in Harlem benefit. Check local listings for more information on the upcoming television appearances. » TOP Evan to attend ABC's Dancing with the Stars March 29, 2009 — Evan is headed for Dancing with the Stars. But the newly crowned World Champion will not compete, he will instead watch from the audience Monday along with 2009 World Championship silver medalists Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto. Among the celebrities competing for Dancing with the Stars glory is Beijing Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson. She performed alongside Evan and Belbin in December's Progressive Skating and Gymnastics Spectacular. "After the Progressive Skating and Gymnastics Spectacular, we became really good friends with a lot of the gymnasts," said Evan, who was cheered on by Olympic Champion Nastia Liukin at the World Championships. "It will be nice to see Shawn again." Check local listings for more information on the show, as he may be shown during the broadcast. » TOP
Evan wins 2009 World Championship with standing ovation March 26, 2009 — Evan is the 2009 World Champion. "Tonight I wasn't thinking about winning," Evan said. "I wasn't thinking about medaling, I just wanted to skate well. To have the title hasn't really soaked in yet. My legs were a little stiff, because I was nervous, but once I hit that first jump -- I took a deep breath and felt really good." Skating before his adopted hometown crowd at the 2009 World Championships in Los Angeles, Evan scored a personal best 242.23 points to take the gold medal. He is the first American man to become a World Champion since Todd Eldredge in 1996. "It has been a slow build for me this season," Evan said. "But when I got here I felt a new aura of confidence and was like a calm, new person." Evan did not squeak out the World title. He bested Canada's Patrick Chan (237.58) by 4.65 points and France's Brian Joubert (235.97), the 2007 World Champion, by 6.26. Joubert won the short program by 1.7 points. His near flawless performance started with a triple lutz-triple toe combination then he nailed a triple axel and a triple Salchow. The other jumps were a triple axel-double toe, triple loop, triple flip-double toe-double loop, triple lutz and finished his passes with a double axel. "There was a moment in my footwork when I had a weird look of shock on my face," he said. "I tried to rein it in but once the elements were over I started celebrating." Evan's free skate, which brought the crowd to its feet about 10 seconds before his final combination spin was even complete, earned him a personal best 159.53 points. He won both the technical element score (80.53) and the program component score (79.00). Perhaps most remarkable is that he performed like a World Champion even though his health conditions are less than ideal. He did not perform a quadruple jump in Los Angeles, mainly because he has had to cope with a painful stress fracture in his left foot that he will soon have placed in a cast for four weeks. "I knew I wasn't going to do a quad," said Evan, who withdrew from the 2008 Worlds because of a fluke injury in practice. "The doctor told me it wasn't going to happen." But he did not need the quad, which he performed when he won the silver medal at last month's Four Continents Championships. He received positive grades of execution on 12 of 13 elements and a neutral grade on the other. His spins were all Level 4, the highest rating possible. » TOP
Evan turns in season's best short program at Worlds in Los Angeles March 25, 2009 — The World Championship short program was no problem for Evan. His electrifying performance to "Bolero" brought the Staples Center crowd to its feet before he even struck a final pose. "Once the hard elements were out of the way, I started celebrating as the rest of the program went on," said Evan, who started his program with a triple axel and followed it with a triple lutz-triple toe combination. He is currently second. "I love this building, and I'm here all the time for Lakers games," he said. "I live and train here, so I felt like good energy here. I feel confident, but more so than that, I just feel really good energy in this building." The skate netted Evan a season's best 82.70 points. While his technical element score was third among the field of 50-competitors, his program components were only one-tenth behind short program winner France's Brian Joubert (84.40). The difference came down to the solo triple jump in Evan performed, a flip, versus the more difficult triple lutz that Joubert performed as his solo jump. Both men had deductions for elements, including the wrong take off edge on Evan's flip. Evan skates 23rd of 24 skaters, before Joubert, in Thursday's free skate. Watch the competition live online at www.UniversalSports.com. The men's competition will also be shown live on the Oxygen television network. » TOP

In 2005 and 2006, he won back-to-back World bronze medals but he finished fifth after winning his first U.S. Championship in 2007. Evan, who was training last week with Nichol in Toronto, withdrew from the 2008 Worlds event due to injury. Evan starts his promotions on Los Angeles' No. 1 morning show, Good Day LA on Fox. Fans across the country can watch him chat with hosts including Gillian Barberie Reynolds at www.myfoxla.com. He will further promote the World Championships in interviews throughout the coming weeks including one with NBC Los Angeles, which is set for Thursday. » TOP
Evan turns in sterling performance at Four Continents February 7, 2009 — Evan is the 2009 Four Continents Championship silver medalist after a dynamic free skate that included a solid quadruple toe. Skating in the same arena that will be used for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Evan finished with a personal best 237.15 points. He far surpassed the marks that helped him to bronze at Skate America, Skate Canada and the U.S. Championships earlier this season. "I had a little slow start, but I'm hoping to peak by the World Championships," Evan said. "This was just a good stepping stone for me. The competition [Four Continents] has changed so much. A lot of the top athletes would pass and not come and they would take a rest and get ready for Worlds. And now it's become sort of the super power competition for the men and for the ladies." "Minus Brian [Joubert], I think the top contenders in the world were here and the strength in the overall competition was remarkable," he said. "So I'm proud to have won a medal among that difficult field." Evan's performance to "Rhapsody in Blue" opened with a solid quad toe, which received a positive grade of execution. He encountered the only problem of his program on the next element, a solo triple axel. It was downgraded to a double and received a negative grade of execution. "Last season I landed a quad in each competition I was at, this was my first one this season to successfully land in the competition, so it was kind of starting to be a monkey on my back this year," he said. "They had been going great in practice and great in warmups but just weren't happening in the competitions." But the two-time World Championship bronze medalist recovered nicely to land a triple Salchow and a triple axel-triple toe combination, with no problems on the axel. Evan landed a triple loop, triple flip-double toe-double loop, triple lutz and triple flip. All three of his spins were a Level 4 while both of his step sequences were judged as a Level 3. » TOP
Evan in second at Four Continents February 5, 2009 — Evan is in second place at the Four Continents Championships in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He has 81.65 points after a solid short program. "This performance is a definite step up from U.S. Nationals, and I am just trying to gain momentum as I look forward to the World Championships in my hometown," Evan said. To the music of "Bolero," Evan started with a triple axel and went on to perform a triple lutz-triple toe combination. His program also included a triple flip, with a slight edge call, and two Level 4 spins. Another spin and two step sequences were Level 3. He received the second highest total element score (44.30) and program components score (37.35) to place behind Canada's Patrick Chan, who had one of the highest scoring short programs in history. Chan scored 88.90 in front of a supportive Canadian crowd. "While waiting in the final warm-up group to get on the ice, Patrick was finishing. Seeing Patrick's score come up, and knowing that he had done one of the best short programs ever, was inspiring," Evan said. » TOP
Evan makes the World Championship team January 25, 2009 — Evan is headed to the World Championships in Los Angeles after a third place performance at the U.S. Championships in Cleveland, Ohio. In his performance to "Rhapsody in Blue," Evan showed he is willing to take a risk for what he wants, attempting a quadruple toe as the opening jump in his program. He fell but recovered nicely to perform all of his other elements. "I wasn't tired, I wasn't winded, I wasn't tense," Lysacek said. "I was just wobbly, I guess." The triple axel that gave him problems in his back-to-back bronze medal appearances on the Grand Prix series this year was spot on. He landed two in his free skate but it was not enough for a third straight title. "The only reason why it's so difficult to defend the title is because it means so much to me," said Evan, who won the two previous national titles. "That's the saddest part." The top three skaters are moving onto the Worlds in March. Also, all three were selected to compete at February's Four Continents Championships, which will be held in the same rink as the 2010 Olympic Winter Games competition. » TOP
Evan in second at U.S. Championships in Cleveland January 24, 2009 — Evan led off the men's short program at the U.S. Championships in Cleveland, Ohio, with a performance so stellar the crowd rewarded him with a standing ovation for his efforts. "The crowd was very nice and supportive. I commend you all for staying out for such a long event," said Evan, who is in second place entering Sunday's free skate. He received 83.59 points for his technically sound program. "I think it went well," Evan said. "I said this last year, defending the title is probably the most difficult thing I go through in the season." He started with a triple axel, a jump that has received special attention since Skate America and Skate Canada, where he did not receive full credit. While he did not attempt a quadruple jump, he did land a triple lutz-triple toe combination and a triple flip. His "Bolero" program came alive with footwork sequences judged as the best in the competition. "I did a lot of training at home preparing for this event and I think it came through in the places that I wanted it to," he said. » TOP

Evan wins first career medal at Skate Canada November 1, 2008 — Evan won the Skate Canada bronze medal Saturday in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada with 209.27 points. It is his first career medal from the competition, having never competed at Skate Canada before this season. "I was happy today. It took some fight to get out and get through that performance and stay on my feet for all of the elements, but most of all I really like the music, the program," he said. He started his George Gershwin themed free skate solidly with a triple lutz, taking out the opening quadruple toe he attempted and fell on at Skate America. Evan then landed a triple axel and triple Salchow. But the triple axel in his planned triple axel-double toe-double loop combination was downgraded to a double because of under rotation. His next jump, a planned triple loop, was also judged as under rotated. "I think it's a strong start. Obviously, I have my work cut out for me. My coach and I have our work cut out for us for the rest of the season, but I think we have a good idea what to work on," said Evan, who also won the bronze medal at Skate America. After the two under rotations, he got back on track. Evan executed a triple flip-triple toe, triple lutz-double toe and a double axel. His step sequences were judged Level 2 last week but were upgraded to a Level 3 in Ottawa. » TOP
Evan finishes fourth in Skate Canada short program October 31, 2008 — In his first career appearance at Skate Canada, held in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Evan finished fourth with his "Bolero" short program with 71.40 points for a less than perfect performance. "I just had one little bobble in the score because, I'm gonna guess, I didn't get credit for a combination at all because of the steps in between," he said before seeing the protocols for the short program. Evan's guess was the correct assumption. He did not receive credit for the second jump in his planned triple lutz-triple toe combination as he took steps between the jumps rather than connecting them. The mistake may have cost him the lead but a clean triple axel helped secure fourth place. The free skate is Saturday afternoon. » TOP
A fourth straight Skate America medal for Evan October 25, 2008 — Add another Skate America medal to Evan's fast growing collection. Saturday night before a supportive crowd in Everett, Wash., Evan claimed the bronze medal, his fourth consecutive medal at the competition. Evan won the short program with a spectacular showing but dropped to third place overall after several of his elements were downgraded. "I can't say anything about the program as far as the technical [marks] are concerned because I haven't had time to look over the scores," he said after his skate, which ended the evening of competition. Evan was downgraded on his opening attempt of a quad toe after falling. To the music of "Rhapsody in Blue," he also performed a triple axel, a triple Salchow and a triple axel-double toe-double loop combination, although the triple axel in was downgraded. His third place free skate also included a triple loop, triple flip-triple toe combination with an edge call on the flip, a triple lutz and another triple flip. Evan also performed two Level 4 spins but his footwork, which has become a trademark for its difficulty, was valued at Level 2 for the program. "I'm happy with the performance," said Evan, who finished second in the three previous years. "We had a good crowd here, and I wanted to look out into the crowd and see happy faces, and I think I did see people that were genuinely happy to be here watching skating." The crowd also awarded Evan with a standing ovation for his performance. After the scores were announced, and Evan was put into third place, many in the crowd expressed their displeasure with the result by booing. Some left before the medals were awarded. "It's a little disappointing to me, because we're trying to get people back in the building," he said. Evan set a personal best program component score when he received the highest program component score, 76.30, of the competition. His total element score of 66.61 lifted him to 141.91, which is more than 17 points off his ISU personal best. Next week, Evan gets an opportunity to extend his Grand Prix medal streak to eight when he competes at Skate Canada in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He's never performed at Skate Canada before but has a strong following in the country. "I'm excited to finally get to compete in a Grand Prix in front of the Canadian fans," Evan said. "I have always had a great time performing there because the crowds are so knowledgeable and passionate. I can't imagine how great they're going to be for Skate Canada or when the 2010 Olympics come to Vancouver." » TOP
Evan wins the short program at Skate America October 24, 2008 — Evan is in position to win his first Skate America title after winning the short program in Everett, Wash. He leads Johnny Weir, 81.30 to 80.55, in their first meeting since Evan claimed a second consecutive national title at the 2008 U.S. Championships in St. Paul, Minn. Debuting a program choreographed to Maurice Ravel's "Bolero" by Russian skating legend Tatiana Tarasova this summer in Moscow, Russia, Evan opened his season with a clean triple axel. He followed that with a triple lutz-triple toe combination, and later a triple flip. He also received high marks for his footwork and spins. "I was happy to start the season off that way. It is a program that I am very proud of, and I was looking forward to doing it. I am pretty happy with the way it went," he said, despite receiving a one-point deduction for a music violation. His performance "Bolero" ran longer than the time, 2 minutes and 50 seconds, allowed for the short program. "It's completely my fault. I started my first movement a second too early. I knew it right away," Evan said. Evan won both the total element score (44.10) and the program component score (38.20) to secure the lead heading into Saturday's free skate, which could lead him to the top of the podium for the first time at Skate America. In the past three years, he has won three silver medals. » TOP

Tarasova choreographs "Bolero" and "Rhapsody in Blue" programs July 29, 2008 — After a successful season using selections from the Zorro soundtracks for his short program and "Tosca" by Giacomo Puccini for his free skate, Evan is retiring both programs in favor of two new programs. Evan recently returned from a three-week trip to Moscow to get choreography for his new programs from Tatiana Tarasova. Working together for the first time, the duo choose "Bolero" by Maurice Ravel for Evan's new short program. His free skate is to "Rhapsody in Blue" by George Gershwin. Evan previously worked exclusively with Lori Nichol in Toronto, Canada. Nichol, also a technical specialist, will continue to work with Evan on strengthening the elements of his programs although she does not have a part in this season's choreography. "It's easy in skating to get into a routine, where you do the same type of programs every year," said Evan, who also worked with Kurt Browning in the past. "I called Tatiana because I wanted to refresh my image and do something different." » TOP

Evan withdraws from the World Championships March 13, 2008 — Evan officially withdrew Wednesday night from the the 2008 World Championships, set for March 17-23, in Gothenburg, Sweden, after sustaining an injury on a routine jump in a Wednesday practice. Evan fell Wednesday during training at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo, Calif., where he was practicing with coach Frank Carroll for the upcoming World event. The blade on his right skate broke at the weld while landing a triple axel. "I've been through three blades in the past three days," said Evan, who recently finished third at February's Four Continents Championship in Goyang, Korea, after winning his second straight U.S. Championship. "Obviously, something isn't right." After going to a local emergency room, Evan learned the fall caused a sprained rotator cuff and sprained ligaments in his left forearm, elbow and shoulder. "I got a bunch of X-rays and, thankfully, nothing's broken," he said. Evan is wearing a soft cast and will be in a sling for about a week. Doctors have recommended that he refrain from attempting any jumps or spins for the next two weeks, an order that will prevent him from competing at his fourth straight World Championship. He made his World debut at the 2005 World Championships in Moscow, Russia, where he captured the bronze medal. Evan became a two-time World bronze medalist the following year in Calgary, Canada, before finishing fifth in 2007. » TOP

Evan wins second straight U.S. Championship January 27, 2008 — Evan is now a two-time U.S. Champion. The competition could not have been any closer between Evan and Johnny Weir at the U.S. Championships in St. Paul, Minn. The two tied with a final score of 244.77 points. But it was Evan who came away with the gold medal for the second consecutive year. While Weir claimed the short program with 83.40, Evan won the tiebreaker because of his 162.72 point, first place performance in the free skate. "If you were scripting this whole deal, you probably couldn’t have done any better job than this," Evan said. He finished second to Weir at 2007 Cup of China and later won bronze to Weir's fourth place at the Grand Prix Final. Evan started his "Tosca" free skate with a quadruple toe-triple toe combination, though the first jump had a two footed landing. He also landed two triple axels, a triple loop, a triple Salchow, a triple lutz and two other combinations, with the highlight of his program being a rare Level 4 step sequence, which helped him gain the technical edge. "Last year, I was excited," said Evan, who also has junior and novice national titles in his collection. "I climbed on top of the mountain I wanted for so long. This year, I felt more relief. Evan overcomes fears to finish second in nationals short January 25, 2008 — Evan, defending a national championship for the first time, is still in the hunt for his second consecutive national title after placing second in the short program at the U.S. Championships in St. Paul, Minn. Evan is close to leader Johnny Weir after a passionate performance to selections from the Zorro movie soundtracks. Admitting later that he was "so scared" to skate, Evan two footed the landing of his quadruple toe before doubling the second jump in the intended quad-triple combination. But despite the mistakes, Evan later won the crowd over with his Level 4 straight-line sequence that helped him earn 82.05 points, including a total elements score of 43.38 and 38.67 for program components. "I give amazing props to Johnny," Evan said following his program. "He's gone through [defending his national title] three times, and this is obviously my first. I was shaking. His program started with a quadruple toe-triple toe but the quad was two footed. Evan also landed a triple Axel and a triple Lutz en route to 42.90 points for total elements. “I was set to go for higher difficulty, so I'm proud of that. Maybe it wasn't perfect right now, but I'm happy that I got through and I got some really good elements," Evan said. "Obviously I had a mistake, but I fought. It was not quite my personal best, but as far as training it’s a good comparison. Obviously the quad is the most difficult element and it's coming first, so being able to have a bobble or whatever to fall and to be able to do the rest is what I'm training." He also scored 36.80 for program components. » TOP |
