Evan hopes to follow his second national title winning season with solid performances at Skate America and Skate Canada, his competitions on the 2008 Grand Prix circuit.

His first Grand Prix appearance during the upcoming season is Oct. 24-26, at Skate America, in Everett, Wash., an event where he has won three consecutive silver medals. Evan also placed fifth at Skate America in 2004.

After competing at Skate America, Evan will make his first career appearance at Skate Canada. The event is Oct. 31-Nov. 2 in Ottawa, Canada, the same country where Evan won the 2006 Championship World bronze medal.

Evan may also qualify for the Grand Prix Final, Dec. 10-14 in Seoul, South Korea. In 2007, he won the bronze medal at the competition. He qualified for the event in the two previous seasons by winning medals at both of his 2005 and 2006 Grand Prix events but withdrew both times due to injury.

June 8, 2008

Evan is a nominee for the 2008 Readers' Choice Eligible Skater of the Year Award.

Evan was also nominated for the award during the last three seasons. Among the more than 25 nationally and internationally recognized nominees, he finished in the top five both times.

Figure skating fans can vote for the Readers' Choice Eligible Skater of the Year Award by logging onto usfigureskating.org. The voting ends July 10.

Other skaters nominated for the current award include the top five senior skaters in each discipline at the U.S. Championships and the top five teams at the U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships.

Medalists from the World Championships, World Junior Championships, World Challenge Cup for Juniors and World Synchronized Skating Championships are also nominated for the award.

The winner will be announced in the August/September issue of Skating magazine. The winner will also appear on U.S. Figure Skating Association site.

The winner will receive the Michelle Kwan Trophy, a crystal sculpture designed by Crystal Signatures of Pennsylvania, at an event next fall. Previous winners include Miami University (2007), Kimmie Meissner (2006), Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto (2005), Sasha Cohen and the Haydenettes (2004).

Kwan won her seventh Readers' Choice Award in 2003. She is the only skater to receive Readers' Choice Eligible Skater of the Year Award multiple times. In recognition of her accomplishments, U.S. Figure Skating named the award in her honor.

May 12, 2008

Evan announced today that he is the newest spokesperson for Total Gym, a Westchester, Pa., company which produces elite exercise equipment. The deal includes a television commerical that will air at a later date.

"I am so proud to be a spokesperson for the Total Gym," he said. "It's a product that I trust and believe in, which is why it's a part of my daily training routine. I have seen the positive results of the Total Gym first hand. As an Olympic athlete, I have access to the best trainers and equipment out there, so I can really appreciate the quality and versatility. I'm honored to be joining the list of athletes and celebrities that endorse the Total Gym.''

Other celebrities who endorse Total Gym are Christie Brinkley and Chuck Norris.

"Total Gym is glad to announce that Olympic athlete, Evan Lysacek, incorporates the Total Gym as part of his regular workout routine,'' said Jim McFadden, CEO of Total Gym. "We are so proud to have Evan as an endorser and spokesperson of the Total Gym."

April 20, 2008

Evan finished his season by winning the men's competition at the Japan Open team event today in Saitama City, Japan. Team North America (481.81) finished third overall behind the host country (491.82) and Team Europe (488.45).

He started his 151.95 point Tosca program with a triple lutz-triple toe combination valued at 11.67 points, which was the highest score awarded for a combination during the event. Evan also landed a triple axel-double toe, triple loop, triple Salchow, triple flip, triple flip-double toe-double loop, triple lutz and a double axel in addition to level three and four footwork and spins.

Both of Evan's flips received an edge deduction but that was not enough for him to relinquish his lead over two-time World Champion Stephane Lambiel (146.49). His North American teammate Todd Eldredge was sixth with 111.94 points.

Former World Champion Kimmie Meissner (109.50) and current U.S. Champion Mirai Nagasu (108.42) were fourth and fifth in the ladies event while Japan's Mao Asada and Yukari Nakano were first and third, helping Japan to an overall win.

March 13, 2008

Evan withdrew Wednesday night from the the 2008 World Figure Skating Championships, March 17-23, in Gothenburg, Sweden, after injuring himself on a routine jump.

Evan fell Wednesday during training at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo, Calif., where he was practicing with Frank Carroll for the upcoming World event. The blade on his right skate broke at the weld while landing a triple Axel.

"I've been through three blades in the past three days," said Evan, who finished third at February's Four Continents Championship in Goyang, Korea. "Obviously, something isn't right."

After going to a local emergency room, Evan learned the fall caused a sprained rotator cuff and sprained ligaments in his left forearm, elbow and shoulder. "I got a bunch of X-rays and, thankfully, nothing's broken," he said.

Evan is wearing a soft cast and will be in a sling for about a week. Doctors have recommended that he refrain from attempting any jumps or spins for the next two weeks, an order that will prevent him from competing at his fourth straight World Championship.

Evan made his World debut at the 2005 World Championships in Moscow, Russia, where he won the bronze medal. He also won the bronze medal the following year in Calgary, Canada, before finishing fifth in 2007.

February 21, 2008

Fresh off winning his second consecutive U.S. Championship, Evan will join the Emmy award-winning Smucker’s Stars on Ice tour for its final 11 shows, beginning March 27 in Cleveland, Ohio.

The two-time World Championship bronze medalist joins Stars on Ice following the 2008 World Championships, March 17-23 in Gothenburg, Sweden. Evan will skate in shows in Connecticut, Ohio, Massachuttes, Maine New Hampshire, New York and Pennsylvania.

Tickets can be purchased through ticketmaster.com. While tickets start at $25, there are discounts available in most cities for seniors (65 and over) and kids (10 and under). Automobile Association of America members receive a 50 percent discount on tickets $50 and under while the Entertainment book offers a 35 percent discount coupon.

February 15, 2008

Evan won the bronze medal at the Four Continents Championships in Goyang City, Korea, with a personal best 233.11 total points. It's the second personal best Evan set in this competition after his 84.06 point short program.

He started his Tosca free skate with a fall on his quadruple toe. But he recovered to land a triple loop and a triple Salchow. Evan put his hand down on his second triple Axel and then landed a triple flip-triple toe, triple lutz and ended with a double Axel.

February 13, 2008

Evan is in second place after a personal best short program at the Four Continents Championships in Goyang City, Korea.

In his 84.06 point performance to Zorro, two-time World Championship bronze medalist Lysacek started with a quadruple toe-triple to combination. He went on to land a triple Axel and a triple lutz en route to 46.06 for technical elements.

"I've made a lot of improvements since nationals," he said. "I went home and trained in a more relaxed environment. I felt a lot better tonight and I think I was kind of able to go on muscle memory and not try to make it happen quite so much. At nationals, I knew there was a lot riding on it and there was a lot of stress on me, so to be able to come here and just have a more chill environment is just kind of a pleasure for me."

January 27, 2008

Evan is now a two-time U.S. Champion.

The competition could not have been any closer between Evan and Johnny Weir at the U.S. Championships in St. Paul, Minn. The two tied with a final score of 244.77 points.

But it was Evan who came away with the gold medal. While Weir claimed the short program with 83.40, Evan won the tiebreaker because of his 162.72 point first place performance in the free skate.

"If you were scripting this whole deal, you probably couldn’t have done any better job than this," Evan said. He finished second to Weir at 2007 Cup of China and later won bronze to Weir's fourth place at the Grand Prix Final.

Evan started his Tosca program with a quadruple toe-triple toe combination though the first jump had a two footed landing. He also landed two triple Axels, a triple loop, a triple Salchow, a triple lutz and two other combinations, with the highlight of his program being a rare Level 4 step sequence, which helped him gain the technical edge.

"Last year, I was excited," he said. "I climbed on top of the mountain I wanted for so long. This year, I felt more relief. I’m sad to say that I’m a little bit happy that it’s over, and I rarely feel like that."

January 25, 2008

Evan is still in the hunt for his second consecutive national championship after placing second in the short program at the U.S. Championships in St. Paul, Minn.

Evan is close to leader Johnny Weir after a passionate performance to selections from the Zorro movie oundtracks. Admitting later that he was "so scared" to skate, Evan two footed the landing of his quadruple toe before doubling the second jump in the intended quad-triple combination.

But despite the mistakes, Evan later won the crowd over with his Level 4 for his straight-line sequence that helped him earn 82.05 points, including a technical elements score of 43.38 and 38.67 for program components.

"I give amazing props to Johnny," Evan said following his programs. "He's gone through (defending his national title) three times, and this is obviously my first. I was shaking. I owe everything to Frank. He sort of socked me in the face and said, 'Go!'"

January 10, 2008

Evan is on the January cover of Skating magazine.

For the cover story Opportunity Knocks, Evan opens up to Amy Rosewater about everything from modeling to the X Games. He also talks to Rosewater about his experiences at the 2007 U.S. Championships and the Grand Prix this season.

"I was a little disappointed in myself in China," he said. "Mentally, I wasn't as strong as I should been. I think I thought after the short program that I just wanted to get this thing in the bag and go home, and that's not what an athlete should be thinking."

Skating magazine is not available on newsstands. For information on how to purchase a copy, visit www.usfigureskating.org/Magazine.asp.

But Skating magazine is not the only place to catch Evan. On Jan. 11, tune into NBC's Today show for an opportunity to watch Evan skate in the Rockefeller Center Rink.

December 15, 2007

For the first time in his career, Evan is a Grand Prix Final medalist. He won the bronze medal Saturday at the Grand Prix Final after a third place short program and third place free skate gave him a combined 229.78 points.

Evan landed the quadruple toe-triple toe combination. He also landed triple loop, triple Lutz, a double Axel, triple Axel-double toe, triple flip-triple toe but had his triple Axel downgraded and fell on his triple Salchow.

"I didn't feel so over my feet today, I worked hard on the ice. I was a little tense, but I was excited about the quad. I've only done four (quad combinations) in competition, so this was a big step. It’s the first time for me to get a level four for the footwork," Evan said.

The program earned him 150.08 points with 75.08 for technical elements and 76.00 for program components.

“In the work that I've put in in the last two weeks between (Cup of China) and now I've seen a lot of improvement," he said. "I think I'm going to go home and concentrate on working and working very hard to improve even more before Nationals. So no rest."

December 14, 2007

Evan is on his way to winning his first Grand Prix Final medal. He finished third in the short program Friday with 79.70 points, just a couple points shy of the personal best he set at Cup of China earlier this season.

His program started with a quadruple toe-triple toe but the quad was two footed. Evan also landed a triple Axel and a triple Lutz en route to 42.90 points for technical elements.

“I was set to go for higher difficulty, so I'm proud of that. Maybe it wasn't perfect right now, but I'm happy that I got through and I got some really good elements," Evan said. "Obviously I had a mistake, but I fought. It was not quite my personal best, but as far as training it’s a good comparison. Obviously the quad is the most difficult element and it's coming first, so being able to have a bobble or whatever to fall and to be able to do the rest is what I'm training."

He also scored 36.80 for program components.

November 10, 2007

It's another silver for Evan's medal collection. He finished second in the free skate at Cup of China to place second overall with 229.36 total points.

Evan fell on his opening quadruple toe and had trouble on his solo triple Axel, the second jump in his Tosca free skate. But he landed a triple loop, triple Salchow, triple Axel-triple toe, triple flip-triple toe, triple lutz and double Axel.

He scored 74.71 for technical elements and 74.10 for program components. Evan earned 147.81 for his Tosca free skate to secure his second silver medal on the Grand Prix this season.

November 9, 2007

Evan is one-step closer to winning his second consecutive Cup of China gold. In the short program Friday in Harbin, China, Evan set a new personal best with 81.55 points.

"Sometimes I don't like the short program; today, I do like it," Evan said. "I did kind of what I always do, I gave it a hundred percent today. I have a lot of confidence going into the free skate, which is always stronger for me. To have a few-points lead feels good."

He opened the program by landing a quadruple-triple combination. Evan went on to land a triple Axel and triple Lutz en route to a first place finish, valued about 13-points higher than his program at Skate America.

"It felt much stronger today than at my first Grand Prix Skate America. It's a good sign that I'm taking positive steps forward toward the later part of the season," Evan said.

October 27, 2007

It's silver again Evan.

For the third consecutive year, Evan finished second at Skate America, the opening competition of the Grand Prix series. He finished second in the short program and first in the free skate to finish with 220.08 points overall points.

"I was coming in today with such a large deficit," Evan said. "So I wasn't really looking for the win, per se. I just wanted to continue to fight through the competition to make it a success overall, which I think it was."

Evan opened his new Tosca free skate with a quadruple toe loop and went on to nail his triple axel, triple loop, triple Salchow, triple lutz out of connecting steps and a double Axel. He also landed a triple Axel-double toe and triple flip-triple toe combinations en route to a high 78.58 for technical elements.

Evan competes next month at Cup of China.

October 26, 2007

Evan is en route to another podium finish after his second place short program Friday at Skate America in Reading, Pa. He earned 67.70 points for the debut of his new Zorro short program.

He opened his program by falling on his opening jump, a planned quadruple toe loop-triple toe loop combination. But Evan salvaged the performance by landing a triple Axel and triple Lutz.

"The program that I put out tonight had a lot higher difficulty," he said. "Obviously, I'd rather go with something a lot more difficult and miss it and be learning and growing than just keep going for the same thing over and over again so I feel good about it."

The men's competition concludes Saturday night with the free skate. Evan will debut his new program to the music of Tosca.

July 18, 2007

With "The Feeling Begins" short program and his trademark "Carmen" free skate retired after the 2007 World Championships, Evan went to the drawing board earlier this month in Toronto to create new programs for the upcoming season.

After shifting through countless choices, Evan has selected Spanish style music from the "Zorro" soundtracks for his short program. His free skate is set selections from "Tosca" by Giacomo Puccini.

"They are really a challenge for me but I'm looking forward to perfecting them," Evan said about his new programs in his Web site journal. Both the short and the long were choreographed by Lori Nichol, who also did "Carmen" in December 2005.

"The classical category is a stretch outside my comfort zone but I'm really working at it," Evan also said.

July 16, 2007

June 8, 2007

Evan hopes to follow his personal best season with solid performances at Skate America and Cup of China, his competitions on the 2007 Grand Prix circuit. He skated at the same two events last year.

His first Grand Prix appearance during the upcoming season is Oct. 25-28, at Skate America, in Reading, Pa., an event where he has won two consecutive silver medals. Evan also placed fifth at Skate America in 2004.

After competing at Skate America, Evan will try to defend his title at Cup of China, Nov. 8-11, in Beijing, China. His only experience at the competition came last year when he won the gold medal, his first ever in the Grand Prix series.

Evan may also qualify for the Grand Prix Final, Dec. 13-16, in Torino, Italy. He qualified for the event in the two previous seasons by winning medals at both of his 2005 and 2006 Grand Prix events but withdrew both times due to injury.

May 23, 2007

Evan is a nominee for the 2007 Readers' Choice Eligible Skater of the Year Award.

Evan was also nominated for the award during the last two seasons.

Previous winners include Kimmie Meissner (2006), Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto (2005), Sasha Cohen and the Haydenettes (2004).

Kwan won her seventh Readers' Choice Award in 2003. She is the only skater to receive Readers' Choice Eligible Skater of the Year Award multiple times. In recognition of her accomplishments, U.S. Figure Skating named the award in her honor.

May 6, 2007

Evan is on the cover of the June issue of International Figure Skating.

"It feels great to be featured on the cover of International Figure Skating for the first time," said Evan, who most recently appeared on the March 2007 cover of Skating magazine with the other U.S. Champions.

Inside the magazine, Evan talks to Susan Wessling about the most successful season of his career, which included his first national title as well as his first gold medal on the Grand Prix.

"For me [winning the U.S. title] means a lot," he said. "It is an opportunity to be a really positive role model for figure skating and kids who want to start figure skating."

He also opens up about his goals in the sport, which include both an Olympic gold medal and a World Championship title.

"I feel like I am on my way. Step by step I am getting there. … Hopefully I will continue improving and progressing and accomplish my goals," he said. "I am planning on being in the sport until I am totally satisfied and have accomplished my goals."

April 15, 2007

With his most successful season now complete, Evan, the newly crowned U.S. Champion, is criss-crossing the nation as a cast member of the two-month Champions on Ice tour, which stops today in Philadelphia.

"I was so pumped when my mom got me fourth row tickets and you definitely didn't disappoint," Julie wrote after attending the opening show.

"Thanks for making the 8-hour drive worthwhile."

The tour started Friday in Richmond, Va., before a show in Washington DC on Saturday.

"We were in Richmond last night and you rocked the house hard," Felicia wrote. "You were amazing."

The audience gets their first glimpse of the two-time World bronze medalist when he skates out to "Get'Cha Head in the Game" from High School Musical in the opening act.

Evan entertains the crowd again in the second half of the show with a performance to the popular 80's hit "Need You Tonight" by INXS.

Dressed in a black short sleeve shirt with matching wrist bands, Evan mixes triple jumps with innovative dance moves.

"Your moves to 'Need you Tonight' made me reminisce about how fun it used to be dancing to that song when I was in college," Tammi wrote after watching the show in DC.

"Thanks for keeping me young with your rockin' performance."

Evan also helps close the show with the all-star cast to a James Bond medley.

Tickets, which start around $20 in most cities, are now on sale for the remaining performances of the 2007 Champions on Ice tour through their Web site championsonice.com.

April 6, 2007

Evan closed out his most successful competitive season with two exhibition performances at the Marshalls U.S. Figure Skating Showcase tonight in Reading, Pa.

But the end of the season finale was not problem free — Evan forgot to bring his pants so he borrowed a pair from fellow Champions on Ice cast member Johnny Weir.

"They're a little short and tight," Evan said in an interview with ABC-TV's Peter Carruthers during the showcase, which airs April 14 on ABC.

The pants might not have been his but the audience was. He entertained the crowd at the Sovereign Center with two new programs including one to "Need You Tonight" by INXS.

Also performing at the event were Olympic silver medalists Sasha Cohen, Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto, as well as every senior medalist from the 2007 U.S. Championships.

Evan heads next to Central Park for Figure Skating in Harlem's "Skating With the Stars, Under the Stars" benefit on April 9. Figure Skating in Harlem is a not-for-profit organization providing opportunity and empowerment for girls in the Harlem community.

Last year at the event, talk-show host Kelly Ripa autographed Evan's left hip. He also met other celebrities like business mogul Donald Trump.

After "Skating With the Stars, Under the Stars," Evan heads out on the road for the nationwide Champions on Ice tour.

The tour starts April 13 in Richmond, Virginia and continues until June 3. Tickets for all 23 stops of Champions on Ice are now on sale through their Web site, championsonice.com.

March 22, 2007

Evan finished fifth at the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, with an overall score of 222.18 points, after placing fifth in both the short program and the free skate.

"When you take a risk, things don't go perfectly sometimes," he said.

Performing to his "Carmen" free skate for the last time, he landed his opening quadruple toe in sequence with a double toe. He also landed a triple lutz-triple toe combination, two triple Axels, a triple Salchow, a triple toe and a triple lutz but most were with shaky landings.

"I felt like I was going to go out and up my technical difficultly and try everything no matter what," he said. "I guess mission accomplished. But yeah, it's the worst score I've ever had for the free skate, so it kind of sucks that it happened here. I'm not going to lie. I kind of wanted to wuss out at one point and not do the quad, because it's not been perfect."

He also landed a double Axel and a double loop.

"I fought through it," said Evan, who has won two bronze medals in his three appearances at the Worlds, "but my energy level kept going down and down and down. It was minor lapses of concentration and little errors that added up in the end."

The performance earned him 148.69 - his lowest free skate score of the season.

"I'm proud of what I did, which was … to go out and try a quad in both programs, and that's what I came for," he said. "It's hard sometimes to focus on that when you want to medal. But you know, I have two, and at some point I'm going to have to take that next step and say, 'If I want to win I have to do a quad in both programs and I have to dominate.'

That's where I'm at. I'm not going to come here and do the same exact program I did a year ago and make no improvement whatsoever in a year. I think I gave it everything. I couldn't give it anymore."

Despite finishing fifth at Worlds, which is highest placement of the three American men competing in Tokyo, this season has been the most successful of Evan's career.

He finished with four medals starting with a silver at Skate America. Evan also won gold medals at Cup of China in November, the U.S. Championships in January and the Four Continents Championships in February.

March 21, 2007

Good-bye 73.42.

Evan set a new international personal best Wednesday at the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, two years after earning his previous personal best 73.42 points at the World Championships in Moscow.

And he did it with a little help from his quadruple jump.

"I wasn't going to hold back just so I can maybe get a medal," he said.

The two-time World bronze medalist finished fifth after setting a personal best with 73.49. He opened with a quad but stepped out before completing the second jump in the combination.

It was the first time Evan landed the quad in the short program.

"I knew it was a risk," he said. "This season, to me, was about going to nationals and winning, and I come to this World Championships now and I feel like, ‘OK, we're building, I want to improve something about my skating, and playing it safe and doing the same old triple Lutz-triple toe is not the way to take that next step toward becoming an Olympic champion.'"

Frenchman Brian Joubert is currently in first place with 83.64 points. Known for landing quadruple jumps, he landed a quad toe-triple toe combination to start his program, and complimented Lysacek for trying one himself.

"I am disappointed because they (the other skaters in the competition) didn't try it [the quad]," Joubert told reporters. "I am happy for Lysacek because he tried it. He had falls in practice, but he went out and tried it."

The free skate is Wednesday.

Evan skates first in the final group.

March 20, 2007

Evan will be the thirty-sixth of 42 skaters to take the ice Wednesday for the men's short program at the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

He is the final skater in the seventh warm-up group, which is also second to last group overall.

March 18, 2007

Welcome to Tokyo Evan.

Evan arrived at the World Figure Skating Championships on Sunday evening.

By Monday, he was successfully landing the quadruple toe-triple toe combination that lifted him to the top at the U.S. Championships in January and the Four Continents in February.

"My job at worlds is not to go and win the gold medal, it's to go and skate really well," he said before leaving for Tokyo.

In his first official practice, he completed a full run through of his trademark "Carmen" free skate but fell on the opening quad toe as well as the triple Axel. He nailed them repeatedly later in the session.

For the first time this season, Evan will also attempt a quad in his short program, which is set to the music of "The Feeling Begins" by Peter Gabriel.

The competition ends Thursday with the free skate.

Evan has a history of success at the Worlds.

At the 2005 World Championships in Moscow, he won the bronze medal. He repeated that finish last year in Calgary, Canada.

February 17, 2007

Based on his stellar performances en route to his first national championship last month, Evan was nominated for the January "Athlete of the Month" award given by the United States Olympic Committee. He finished second.

Alpine skier Julia Mancuso won the award for her record breaking performances in January. The team award went to USA 1 Four-Man Bobsled Team of Steven Holcomb, Pavle Jovanovic, Steve Mesler, and Brock Kreitzburg, who won gold at at the World Cup race.

Evan, who nabbed the honor in November, could be considered for this month's award based on his come back victory at the Four Continents Championship in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Evan competes next at the World Championships in March.

February 9, 2007

Evan knows how to make a comeback.

At the Four Continents Championship in Colorado Springs, Colo., it included a new international personal best in the free skate after two mistakes in the short program left him more than 10 points down.

And tonight, it also included a gold medal, his second at the event.

"Having my coach here made all the difference," Evan said about Frank Carroll, who was participating in a trial in California. "He got here at 6 tonight. He knows how to get inside my head and make it work."

What did Carroll say?

It's "classified," Evan said with a grin.

Whatever it was, it worked.

Evan started his "Carmen" free skate with a quadruple toe-triple toe.

"I've been practicing the quad really well and it wasn't one of my better ones, but when the time comes I like to try and fight for every point," Evan said. "Neither (triple) Axels were good. The second one was really tough and I had to fight for it. That's what we do as athletes."

He earned 84.43 points for his technical elements, about 12 points more than silver medalist Jeffrey Buttle, en route to his 159.23 point personal best free skate. Evan also set a new international personal best with 226.27 total points.

Evan competes next at the World Championships in March in Tokyo.

February 7, 2007

Evan will need one more of his trademark comeback performances Friday, after finishing fourth in the short program tonight at the Four Continents Championship in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Competing for the first time since winning the U.S. Championships, Evan opened his "The Feeling Beings" program with a strong triple Axel. But then he struggled on his planned triple-triple combination, doing a triple-double, and he doubled his planned triple-flip.

Evan finished with 67.04 points. He is less than two points out of third place.

"It was a very strange night for competition," he said. "There were few people in the audience and almost a lack of energy. I usually try to feed off the energy in the crowd, but there wasn't much energy tonight."

The event concludes Friday with the free skate.

January 27, 2007

Evan no longer has the title as the comeback kid.

Instead, he has the title of the 2007 U.S. Figure Skating Champion, after winning both the short program and the free skate at the event in Spokane, Wash. It's his first national title since winning the 2000 junior men's gold medal.

He started his performance to "Carmen" with a quadruple-triple jump combination. For the next four minutes, he nailed each element, including a triple Axel, triple toe combination.

"Basically what I tried to do was totally shut my brain off," Evan said. "It was a little bit surreal. I was kind of out of body, and I could almost hear my heart beating. And it was so strange. And I kept fading in and out.

I would do something and I would be like 'Oh my God this is so cool, but then I would go back to my super-mental zone. So it was weird, but I definitely enjoyed it and I think that I can do better, presentation-wise, than that, but technically, that’s my best performance that I've given."

The scoreboard at the nearly sold out Spokane Arena flashed the technical score of 91.13 points.

"I heard ninety-something for the first mark, and I've never heard that before," bronze medalist Johnny Weir said. "I was really shocked, and like, 'What the hell?' I didn't really know what to expect as far as what Evan had done, but I knew he must have done fantastic."

Evan was fantastic, landing eight triples and one quad in all. After the performance, which earned him 169.89 points, he dropped to his knees as the nearly-sold crowd stood on their feet.

"That was something," he said. "It's hard to put into words how much I wanted to win this title."

Evan is headed to the Four Continents Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo., in two weeks along with silver medalist Ryan Bradley and pewter medalist Jeremy Abbott.

He will also go to the World Championships in March.

January 25, 2007

After a series lackluster short programs that led to comeback performances, Evan is embracing a new role at the U.S. Championships. He's the leader after the short program.

"(Today) was this weight lifted off of my shoulders, and I think this was my goal today — to show anyone that has criticized my short program skating that when I’m really well trained and prepared and want to win something, nothing can stop me," Evan said.

He topped the three-time reigning champion Johnny Weir by a narrow margin, a personal best 78.99 points to 78.14. Both turned in near flawless performances.

"It’s big to get a standing ovation skating in the first group, when people are still eating their nachos and popcorn, and they’re not that into the event yet," Evan said. "To me that was great."

He landed four clean triples, including a triple Lutz-triple toe combination and a triple Axel. Weir, who skated later in the night, bested Evan's triple Axel and triple-triple combination, but he could not catch the two-time World bronze medalist.

Weir and Lysacek won the gold and silver medals at the 2006 U.S. Championships. At Olympics, Lysacek pulled ahead to make it a fourth and fifth place finish for the two friendly competitors.

The free skate is Saturday.

January 24, 2007

The excitement of the 2007 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Spokane, Wash., begins today for Evan, the reigning silver medalist, when he fields questions from the media at a private teleconference around 1 p.m. local time.

Live coverage of the pre-event teleconference is available for free online at The Ice Network Web site, web.icenetwork.com. The teleconferences immediately following the short program Thursday afternoon and the free skate Saturday night will also be available online.

Evan begins his quest for his first U.S. Championship when he takes the ice Thursday afternoon. He is the last skater in the first group and is scheduled to skate sixth out of 18 skaters.

The men's and ladies short program will air Thursday, Jan. 25 from 9 p.m.-12 a.m. Eastern on ESPN2. Please check local listings for more information.

The men's free skate, the marquee event of this year's championship, is Saturday night. Action from the free skate will be televised live Saturday, Jan. 27 from 11 p.m.-1 a.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

January 2, 2007

After being sidelined by a hip injury that forced him to withdraw from the Grand Prix Final last month, Evan has resumed his training for this month's United States Figure Skating Championship in Spokane, Wash.

"I was bumming over the thought of missing out on Nationals so after a couple weeks of rest, I'm starting to work my way back into shape," Evan wrote in a journal entry. "I want to do everything I can to be ready for Nationals."

The championship men's competition starts with the short program on Jan. 25 and continues with the free skate Jan. 27.

"The toughest part of being side lined is the mental aspect, watching the hours roll by and knowing that precious training days have been lost," he also wrote. "I am trying to stay positive, and all of your continued support means the world to me."

December 15, 2006

For the second straight season, a hip injury sustained in practice has forced Evan to withdraw from the Grand Prix Final.

Evan bruised his hip during a Friday morning practice at the Ice Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia, when he fell on a triple Axel.

"I fell this morning on the hip," Evan said in a press conference. "I tried to do some rehab today and get it back in good condition. I had hopes of coming out tonight and trying my best with the performance."

But after experiencing pain in the short program warm up, he withdrew from the event less than an hour before he was supposed to compete.

Evan hopes that the injury will not prevent him from competing at the U.S. Championships in Spokane, Wash., in January.  He won the silver medal at the event last year after finishing third in 2005.

"It really, really hurts," he said. "I hope is it not too serious and I will be OK by the time nationals start. This doctor said from one to six weeks, which could be pretty bad."

The current injury is not related to the hip injury that forced him to withdraw from both the Grand Prix Final and the Marshalls Challenge last season.

"It’s different," Evan said.  "Every doctor has basically said that my height is kind of difficult to work with those elements, and that I always have to be careful with my hips. It was kind of a freak accident. I fell yesterday on a quad, hard, and today on a triple Axel."

U.S. Figure Skating team doctor Joseph Zabilski said the fate of the injury, a bruise that has caused swelling, should be known within the next one to three days.

"Usually with an injury like this the maximum amount of swelling will occur after 24 hours," he said. "Sometimes it takes about 24 hours to really know how severe it is - how much bleeding occurs [and] how much swelling occurs."

Evan called the injury a disappointment in what has been his "best season."  He qualified for the final after winning the silver medal at Skate America and his first Grand Prix title at Cup of China.

Earlier this week, the United States Olympic Committee named Evan their male Athlete of the Month for November.

December 12, 2006

It was a busy November for Evan. For his accomplishments, including the 2006 Cup of China gold medal, the United States Olympic Committee named him their Athlete of the Month for November.

In winning the November honor, Evan beat out tennis player James Blake, triathlete Andy Potts, wrestler Jared Lawrence and snowboarder Scotty Lago, among others.

Evan won the Cup of China championship, Nov. 9-12, marking his first title on the Grand Prix series in six appearances. With a total score of 220.04 points, Evan missed his personal best score by only one point at Cup of China, and beat the second-place finisher by nearly 20 points.

The title qualified for the Grand Prix Final, where the top-six men in the world competed for the prestigious Grand Prix title. The final is Dec. 14-17 in St. Petersburg, Russia.

It will be Evan's first appearance at the Grand Prix Final.

Also honored with the female Athlete of the Month award was skeleton athlete Katie Uhleander. Synchro diving team of Kelci Bryant and Ariel Rittenhouse nabbed the Team of the Month honor.

December 10, 2006

Despite receiving the votes from the panel of expert judges, Evan finished third in the Western division of the Marshalls U.S. Figure Skating Challenge on Sunday afternoon. His performance to "Ave Maria" did not advance him to the finals.

He received 18-percent of the total votes.

The judging panel included two-time Olympic Champion Dick Button, Olympic silver medalist Peter Carruthers and Olympic Champion Peggy Fleming. Also allowed to vote in the competition for one-minute were fans.

Eventual competition winner Sasha Cohen advanced out of the first round with a total of 52-percent of the votes. Also advancing from the West Coast were U.S. Pairs Champions Rena Inoue and John Baldwin with 25-percent of the vote.

The two skaters that advanced from the East Coast were Johnny Weir and Kimmie Meissner. Skaters that did not advance include Emily Hughes, Katy Taylor, and Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto.

Cohen won the competition with 47-percent of the vote. Following the Olympic silver medalist were Weir with 35-percent, Meissner with 10-percent and Inoue and Baldwin with 8-percent.

Evan returns to the ice Dec. 14-17, 2006, for the Grand Prix Final in St. Petersburg, Russia. He qualified for the final by winning the silver medal at Skate America in October and the gold medal at the Cup of China in November.

November 11, 2006

After winning three consecutive silver medals on the Grand Prix circuit, Evan has finally added a a gold medal to his collection. He won the Cup of China championship Saturday with another come from behind victory.

It is his first gold medal from a Grand Prix event in six appearances. It is also his first gold medal in a major competition since he won the 2005 Four Continents Championship.

With his first place "Carmen" free skate, Evan pulled ahead of Sergei Davydov, who had led after the short program, to finish 20.93 points ahead of the silver medalist from Belarus.

Evan earned 150.84 for his skate. He finished first in the technical element with 76.04, more than 16 points ahead of the nearest competitor. Evan landed seven triple jumps with his only mistake being a step out of the triple Axel.

He also finished first in program components with 74.80.

The performance, which was less than two-points short of the personal best he set at the Olympics in February, may have been his last to "Carmen."

"I am going to Toronto next week and listen to music. If there is nothing I really love ... ," Evan said, stopping short of saying "Carmen" could be around for the Grand Prix Final, the U.S. Championships and the remainder of the season.

"It is hard to weigh the risks of getting a new program when this is going so well," Evan said. "I am feeling really comfortable."

Evan is used to comeback performances.

But for the free skate at Cup of China on Saturday, he does not need the personal best free skate that moved him from tenth to fourth at the Olympics or the almost as good performance that moved him from eighth to third at the recent World Championships.

He is in second place after his "The Feeling Begins" short program in Nanjing, China. The 69.20 points he earned for the performance put him only one-fourth of a point behind leader Sergei Davydov of Belarus, 69.45 to 69.20.

Although he singled a planned triple flip, Evan landed his triple Axel and a triple Lutz-triple toe combination. Both the triple Axel and the combination gave him problems at Skate America two weeks ago.

"I think it was an improvement from my first Grand Prix appearance in Skate America, so that is all we can ask for at this point, just to keep building and improving," he said.

Evan skates last in the free skate on Saturday.

While Evan was competing at Skate America in Hartford, Conn., his cast mates from the independent film Skate Great! held a private screening in Los Angeles.

"Skate Great! is an independent film about skating in which I give the protagonist, a 28-year-old aspiring skating champion, advice," Evan said.

"The role is about 20 lines which I filmed on a day off from Champions on Ice," he said. It is his first acting role.

"He plays Vladimir Plushenko, a Russian two-time Olympic gold medal champion in men's figure skating with a fondness for vodka," said director Ryan Lonergan.

Lonergan also co-wrote and produced Skate Great! with Cassandra Smith, the actress who stars in the 30-minute film.

"The movie is a mockumentary about a 28 year-old female figure skater down on her luck but still trying to make it," Lonergan said. "Evan did an amazing job and is very funny in his role."

Lonergan says the film will be submitted to festivals. He expects public screenings of Skate Great! in Los Angeles in 2007.

The Friday free skate at Skate America was another come from behind performance for Evan. After finishing third in the short program on Thursday, he rebounded to win the free skate and the silver medal with 221.09 overall points.

"I feel good. I'm happy with my conditioning at this point in the season," Evan said. "I came in here to do well, so it feels good to end it on a better note."

He did not compare Skate America to his performance at the Olympics, a competition where he went from tenth in the short program to fourth overall, or at the recent World Championships where he went from seventh to third.

"It's not like coming from a disaster to something great," Evan said. 'It's just a little bit of a shaky performance [yesterday], and I got that out of my system."

He scored 150.74 points in the free skate. The eight triple jumps in his "Carmen" program helped him score 77.14 points for technical elements, nearly two-points higher than his closest competitor. His component score was 73.60.

"He's a great long-program skater," coach Frank Carroll said. "And I think he gets mad. What I've got to do is get him mad at the beginning of the competition instead of the end, and get ready to do battle."

The competition will air on tape delay Sunday on ESPN. For more information on the broadcast, including the time, please check local television listings.

Evan returns to competition for the Cup of China on November 9-12 in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. He will also skate December 10 at the Marshalls U.S. Figure Skating Challenge in Boston.

October 26, 2006

Evan is in third place after the short program at Skate America. In the debut of his "Last Temptation of Christ" program, he earned 70.35 points including 34.45 for his program components.

"There's a lot of difficulty in the components, so I'm glad to see that aspect of it is getting worked out," he said. "I had some minor errors, but I tried to put my heart and soul into the rest of the performance and I think it showed in the scores."

His errors included putting his hand down on the ice after nearly falling on the opening triple Axel. Later in the program, he experienced a problem with the landing of the triple toe in his triple Lutz-triple toe combination.

"I gave it 100 percent like I always do every time," he said of the troubled program that included a a clean triple flip. "Sometimes I'm great and sometimes I have to fight a little bit, and I fought today to stay on my feet."

The men's competition concludes Friday night with the free skate.

Evan started his season October 15 with a win over Japan in the team competition at the Campbell's Cup in Cincinnati, Ohio.  He also finished second in the individual free skate event with 138.54 points.

His performance to "Carmen" started with a solid triple lutz, triple toe combination.  He then completed a triple Axel, triple loop and triple Salchow before he encountered a "weird" fall on his second triple Axel.

"I felt good but that was just kind of a weird fall for me," Evan said in an interview with ABC commentator Peter Carruthers.  He also landed a triple flip, triple toe combination before landing another triple lutz and a double Axel.

His program components earned him a competition high 73.50.

Japanese skater Nobunari Oda won the free skate with 151.38 points.  American Scott Smith placed third with 132.86 while Daisuke Takahashi of Japan was fourth with 116.62.

Johnny Weir, the only American to perform a short program, contributed to the U.S. victory by earning 78.61 for his program.  Japan's Kensuke Nakaniwa finished second with 59.08.

"It's an awesome way to start the season," Evan said. "I'm sure he'll [Johnny Weir] want to beat me, and I'll want to beat him, but it's nice to be on a team rooting for each other. It's a long, difficult season, and it's nice to have a fun one to kick it off."

Evan returns to competition in two weeks at Skate America. Last season at Skate America, Evan claimed a silver medal, his first career medal in Grand Prix competition.

For most of his senior career, Evan has skated to Latin themed music in the short program. But in five weeks he will premier his new Middle Eastern themed short program choreographed by four-time World Champion Kurt Browning.

The new program set to selections of Peter Gabriel music from "The Last Temptation of Christ" movie soundtrack will debut at Skate America. The men's short program competition is scheduled for October 26 at the Hartford Civic Center in Hartford, Conn.

Evan will use his "Carmen" free skate from the last season for his first events of the season. The free skate at Skate America is scheduled for October 27.

Evan also plans to skate both programs at Cup of China on November 9-12, in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province.

Skate America and Cup of China are two events in a series of six competitions that lead to the Grand Prix Final on December 14-17 in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Evan qualified for the Grand Prix Final last season after winning a silver medal at 2005 Skate America and 2005 NHK Trophy but withdrew due to injury.

With the five-month Champions on Ice tour now complete, Evan is focusing on his programs for the upcoming season. He will travel to Toronto, Canada, next week to work on a short program with his new choreographer Kurt Browning.

Four-time World Champion Browning, the first man to land a quadruple jump in competition, represented Canada in three Olympic Games. He has choreographed programs for Alissa Czisny, Tara Lipinski and Yuka Sato.

"Don't ask me what music yet because I don't even know," Evan said. He skated to selections from the Gypsy Kings last season before switching back to his Spanish themed "Espana Cani" program from the previous season.

Evan plans to continue skating to selections from "Carmen Suite" by George Bizet and "Carmen" by Rodion Shedrinand for the long program. His performances to the Lori Nichol choreographed program earned him fourth place at the Olympic Games and a medal in three other competitions.

August 21, 2006

Evan ended his first full season with the national Champions on Ice tour on Wednesday. The August 16 performance, held in the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, marked the end of a five-month tour that made stops in more than 50 cities.

"Thank you to everyone who came out to support me on the tour," Evan said.

The tour, which he called "greatest thing that has happened," provided Evan with an opportunity to showcase his personality. For his solo performance, he skated to a unique medley of songs from Chris Brown, Joaquin Phoenix and Elvis Presley.

"He skated this number [in Detroit, Mich.] with a playful abandon that revealed a fun-loving side of his nature only hinted at in other programs, all the while executing dance steps on ice that most have trouble achieving even on 'dry' ground," said Mary Crispin.

"So expressive was his delivery that I felt he could’ve skated it to the 'sound of silence' just as well as to the medley of 'Run It,' 'Get Rhythm' and 'Hound Dog' and still have gotten the message across," she added. Crispin attended the May 7 show in Detroit, Mich. with her husband.

"The program is a fun mix of the last three songs on my iPod," Evan explained in April. He came up with the idea while working with choreographer Lori Nichol days before the start of the tour.

With the tour now complete, Evan will return to Southern California to come up with programs for the new season, which he plans to start at the Campbell's Cup in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Oct. 15.

Please read the April 23 news update for more information on the Champions on Ice tour. For additional information on Evan's performances at the Detroit show, please read the review by Mary Crispin at www.figureskatersonline.com/evanlysacek/06coireview.html.

Evan lives in Southern California but his hometown remains Naperville, Ill., the Chicago suburb that CNNMoney.com recently selected as the second best small town to live in.

Last year Naperville, a town of 141,600 people, was ranked No. 3.

The selection was based on a variety of factors including an excellent public schools, which Evan attended through his 2003 graduation from Neuqua Valley High School.

Naperville was also selected because of the River walk, four miles of bricked pathways that hug the DuPage River as it meanders through downtown, as well as an abundance of green space.

Fort Collins, Colo. was ranked the No. 1 place to live among small cities while Colorado Springs, the home of the U.S. Figure Skating Association, was named the best large city to live in.

Evan will hold an autograph signing and skating clinic at the Eagles Ice Arena in Spokane, Wash. on July 12, to promote the 2007 U.S. National Championships, where he hopes to skate to his first national championship.

"After winning the U.S. silver in 2006, I'm hoping that Spokane is a golden experience," Evan said. "As a competitor I am really looking forward to it, but for fans from around the Northwest the U.S. Championships are really a great opportunity to see which skaters win the opportunity to represent the United States at the World Championships in Tokyo."

The autograph signing and skating clinic starts the countdown for the 2007 U.S. Championships, hosted by the Spokane Arena and the new Spokane Convention Center Jan. 21-28. Ticket packages for the event are already on sale by calling 1-866-USA-2007 or visiting www.spokane2007.com.
