Biography (Early Career)
Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir started skating together at the encouragement of coach Carrie Wall. "My new coach Carrie told me I should tryout with Simon and that we would be able to go to the Eastern Sectional Championships," Marissa said.
Not only did the team make it to the Eastern Sectional Championships in 2006, Marissa and Simon placed fourth, qualifying them for the 2007 U.S. Championships in Spokane, Wash. The team finished ninth in the novice competition at their first national championships.
"Going to nationals for the first time was the best feeling," Marissa said.
In their second season together, Marissa and Simon made their international debut with a 10th place finish at Junior Grand Prix Estonia. They went on to win the Sectional Championship and a bronze medal in novice pairs at the 2008 U.S. Championships.
"Medaling at nationals is the most defining moment of my career," Simon said.
Marissa and Simon are skating as juniors nationally for the first time the 2008-2009 season. In September, they opened the season by placing fourth at JGP Czech Republic. The team also placed fourth at JGP Great Britain, qualifying them for the JGP Final, where they were sixth.
At the 2009 U.S. Championships, the team made the successful leap from the novice competition to the junior event, winning the bronze medal. The team also won the bronze medal at the World Junior Championships to end their junior careers.
