UNITED STATES CHAMPION ASHLEY WAGNER SIGNS WITH NIKE
November 7, 2012– 2012 United States Champion Ashley Wagner signs an
athlete partnership agreement with Nike, Inc.
Wagner said, "I am so honored and excited to be a Nike Athlete. It is a
dream come true. I have always loved Nike and wearing their clothing
when I train. Having Nike's support leading up to the 2014 Winter
Olympic games in Sochi means the world to me! "Wagner made a bold move
in June 2011 to move from her training center in Wilmington, Del., which
is not far from her family in Annapolis, to head to Southern California
and train with legendary coach John Nicks, who has guided numerous
skaters to Olympic and world medals. Although she had known
choreographer Phillip Mills for some time, she knew she was starting
over out West and she was determined to make the most of her
cross-country move.
You might think relocating would be easy now for Wagner, who was born on
a U.S. Army base in Germany while her father was stationed there, and
has moved numerous times in her 20-year-old life, but the move to
California marked new independence for her.
Under the guidance of legendary coach John Nicks, Wagner had an
impressive year. First, Wagner won her first national championship
title at the 2012 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in San Jose, Calif.,
in January. Then she followed up that dramatic event by beating some of
the best skaters in the world at the Four Continents Championships in
Colorado Springs followed by a win at the 2012 Skate America
Championship held in October, 2012.
No longer the “almost girl” as she had been dubbed; Wagner is now the
“it girl” – and she is taking that momentum and confidence with her to
the 2014 Winter Games, set for February in Sochi .
